vertical boiler with horizontal engine on a single bedplate

Some early Robey steam engines

Author: Southworth

The British engineering firm of Robey & Co. was founded in 1854. They produced vast numbers of the smaller types of steam engine. These were pleasing to the eye and elegant. More importantly, they offered their owners many years of trouble-free working.

This most interesting book is based on a series of albumen photographs from the period 1874-86. Some are faded or dirty, but in the main, they are of surprising quality. Our collection presents 50 of them (49 in A5-size; one a centrespread in A3-size). Text is limited to captions plus a very short introduction .... these photo's can (and do!) speak for themselves.

The engines shown are of various types. Vertical and horizontal singles; horizontal twins, cross and tandem compounds. Some have simple slide valves, others have Meyer-gear, yet others have governor-controlled expansion. Some are condensing, others exhaust in the free air or in a process main. Combinations of a vertical boiler with an engine on a single bed-plate were available with horizontal and vertical engines. One photo shows such a boiler and engine mounted on wheels and provided with a winding drum, ready to work as a winch. The under-type semi-portable engine (a locomotive boiler with an engine fitted underneath, mounted on a single bed-plate, which doubled as a water tank) was an 1874 Robey patent. It required no heavy foundations and was particularly useful for short-time operations, e.g., in mining. Various examples are shown, fitted either for driving or for winding. Robey's also made portables and locomobiles, in the more common design with the cylinder(s) on top of the boiler; and small locomotives. A number of these are illustrated.

These photo's are of great interest and you will find yourself studying them with a magnifying glass to find out more details. The standard of reproduction, on glossy art paper, makes this quite feasible.
