Commissioned engineering models

Stel, je bent op zoek naar een technisch model. Een grijpbaar object, een stuk verkleinde techniek, om te laten zien wat je bedrijf zoal kan en/of doet.

Say - you are looking for an engineering model. A piece of scaled-down machinery that can be handled, to show what your company (can) do.

Wat voor model?

De keuze van het optimale model is niet simpel, je hebt ze in alle maten en soorten. De keuze wordt natuurlijk bepaald door het doel waarnaar je streeft. Is het een hoogwaardig en luxueus object voor een directiekamer? Is het bestemd voor schenking aan een plaatselijk museum? Voor de showroom? Gaat de Afdeling Verkoop er mee op stap? Moet het uiterst degelijk zijn, omdat er mee gesleept en gegooid zal gaan worden op beurzen, bijeenkomsten, instructies en trainingen? Of is het voornamelijk bedoeld als eenvoudig "binnen­komertje" (wachttijd-doder) op de receptiebalie?

Het maakt nogal verschil of er één model nodig is of dat je méérdere exemplaren wilt hebben, bij­voorbeeld om aan klanten cadeau te doen. In het laatste geval - simpel hebbedingetje of juist tame­lijk prestigieus? Een ingenieuze eye-catcher met technische inslag?

What kind of a model?

Choosing the optimum model is no simple job, because they come in all sizes and types. The choice is of course determined directly by the goal you're aiming for. Are you looking for a superior and luxurious object destined for the President's office? Do you want to donate it to a local museum? Will it help brighten the Showroom? Will the Sales Department do the rounds with it? Must it be extra-sturdy as it will be manhandled and thrown around during trade fairs, conferences, instruction or training sessions? Or will it rather be a waiting-time killer on your Reception desk?

Clearly, it makes a difference whether you require a single model or a number of copies, say as gifts to customers. In the latter case, are you looking for a simple "must-have" or on the other hand, something fairly prestigious? An ingenious technical eye-catcher?

Statisch, al dan niet op schaal

Bijvoorbeeld een model van een machine of installatie. Dit lijkt misschien eenvoudig, maar dat is niet zo. Het model kan uitsluitend de buitenzijde tonen; maar het kan ook opengewerkt zijn, zodat je kunt zien hoe het origineel in elkaar steekt. Of uitneembaar, om stap-voor-stap de opbouw te tonen. Herinner je je nog die griezelige anatomische modellen?

Dynamisch, al dan niet functionerend

Toont de machine-onderdelen in beweging. Hetzij een loze beweging, hetzij werkelijk werkend. Functionerende modellen kunnen de bewegingen van het origineel op ware snelheid weergeven, maar ook versneld of juist vertraagd. Zo wordt de werkingswijze en/of de dynamica van het origineel duidelijk(er). Bij schaalmodellen moet je hierbij natuurlijk wel de "modelregels" in acht nemen. Bewegingsgeprogrammeerde modellen worden soms met een PC bestuurd, om op afroep verschillende bewegingsprogramma's af te spelen.

Static, scaled-down or life-size

For example, a model of some machine or plant. This may seem straightforward, but it is not. The model can be "exterior-only"; but it can also be partially cut-away, to show interior construction. It can be built so that it may be taken apart piece by piece, to show how it is constructed. Remember those creepy anatomical models? They sure had impact!

Dynamic, functioning or not

Shows the parts of the machine in motion. Operation can be simulated, but where feasible the machine might actually operate. The model could run at original speed, or speeded up, or slowed down. In these ways the modus operandi and/or the dynamics of the original motion may be clarified. Naturally, in scale models, scale rules must be observed. This sometimes causes quite complex puzzles. The motion sequence of a model can be controlled by a computer, to demonstrate on demand a variety of motion patterns.

Vroeger ook zo graag gebouwd? Meccano- of Trixmodellen zijn een lichtvoetige entr'acte tussen breadboard en werkelijkheid, als het ware de essentie, de rode draad van het ontwerp. Aandoenlijk en voor iedereen te volgen.

Remember the pleasure those metal construction kits gave you? Meccano models are a nimble link between breadboard and reality. The essential "it" of a construction, so to say. Touching and really very easy to comprehend.

Mock-ups, maquettes en diorama's

Hoeven zelden voorbeeldsgetrouw te functioneren, want ze dienen vooral om een impressie te geven. Een mock-up is zodoende een afspiegeling van het origineel - maar het is géén nauwkeurige (maatgetrouwe) documentatie. Het ding moet er vooral in drie dimensies smakelijk uit zien, je moet je ontwerp van alle kanten kunnen bekijken. Je kunt trouwens mooie perspectivische grapjes uithalen, om het geheel hanteerbaar te houden. Omdat dit soort modellen niet hoeven te werken, worden ze vaak uit makkelijk bewerkbare non-prototypical materials opgebouwd, meest kunststof of hout. Stedebouwkundige en architectuurmodellen behoren tot deze categorie. Omdat je flink kunt verkleinen blijft het overzicht behouden (helicopter-view). Bedenk dat maquettes niet beperkt hoeven blijven tot buitenaanzichten. Ze kunnen even goed een interieur tot onderwerp hebben.

Mock-ups, architectural models and dioramas

Need only rarely function as in real life, because they are mainly intended to create an impression. As such, a mock-up is a reflection of the prototype - but not an accurate, true-to-scale representation of it. It is particularly important that it looks juicy while at the same time you should be able to look at it from all directions. You may manipulate the perspective, to help fit the dimensions of the model to available space. Because these models need not work, they often are made in non-prototypical materials, that can be machined more easily, usually plastic or wood. Urban planning and architectural models belong in this category. Since you can reduce the scale to which the models are made quite considerably, you may easily get the overall picture (helicopter view). Do remember that these models need not be restricted to exterior views. They can show an interior as well.

Halfmodellen en aanzichten of doorsneden in bas-reliëf

Deze (semi) tweedimensionale modellen bieden weer andere mogelijkheden. Ze worden meestal zeer zorgvuldig uitgevoerd en afgewerkt, in luxueuze materialen. Imposant. Ze doen het perfect aan de muren van een ontvangst- of vergaderruimte.

Half models and elevations or sections in low relief

These 2½ or 2-dimensional models offer different possibilities. They usually are fabricated to a high standard of finish, from first-class materials. Imposing. Well suited to hang on the walls of a reception hall or an assembly room.

Grotere oplaag, voor verspreiding

Gezien de kosten zijn de vormgevingsmogelijkheden tamelijk beperkt. Denk aan kartonnen bouwplaten (voor uiteindelijk 3D-presentaties) en aan gelaagde prenten (voor semi-dynamische 2D-presentaties).

Multiple copies, for distribution

As cost has to be considered, few production methods are feasible. I suggest cardboard cut-out models (which after assembly give a 3D-presentation); or layered pictures (for semi-dynamic 2D-presentations).

Bouwde je vroeger ook graag van die kartonnen modelletjes? De bouwplaat is nog steeds een succesnummer; hij biedt namelijk een prima mogelijkheid om je produkten goedkoop in modelvorm onder de mensen te brengen. Een bouwplaat is eenvoudig in grote hoeveelheden te reproduceren, plano of opgerold te versturen; en hij inspireert de ontvanger tot het ter hand nemen van schaar en lijm. Het bouwen kost je geen cent! Typisch geschikt voor ruime verspreiding. Je kunt het model trouwens ook op je website voor download aanbieden, dan heb je zelfs géén verzendkosten ....

Did you, too, like assembling those card models in your youth? Such models are still successful today because they are an excellent (and not too costly) way to get your products wide attention. A cardboard cut-out model can simply be reproduced in large quantities, it can be sent out by traditional mail at no excessive cost; and it inspires the addressee to pick up scissors and glue. You do not even have to pay for assembly! A type of model well suited for wide distribution. Even better perhaps, you could offer the model for download on your website, so avoiding all mailing costs ....

Gelaagde prenten

Minder bekend, maar heel verhelderend. Je vindt ze bijvoorbeeld in technische encyclopedieën uit de jaren 1920-1950. Je stapelt lagen bedrukt karton, die elk een opvolgende doorsnede van een machine of apparaat tonen. Zo zie je het object laag op laag groeien. Een ideale manier om ook de subtielste inwendige details te verhelderen. Voor produktie en verspreiding geldt hetzelfde als voor bouwplaten.

Zoals blijkt uit nevenstaand voorbeeld kun je deze modellen ook in digitale vorm verspreiden ....

Layered diagrams

Less well-known but very clarifying. You'll find examples of them for instance in technical encyclopædias dating from the 1920s to the 1950s. You stack layers of printed cardboard, each showing successive sections of a machine. In this way you observe the object grow layer by layer. An ideal way to explain the most subtle interior details. For production and distribution, the same holds as for cardboard cut-outs.

Faciliteiten

Zo. Ik geloof dat ik wel mag stellen dat er een ruime keus aan mogelijkheden bestaat. Laat je adviseren door een professional. Hij kan je technische ondersteuning geven bij het ontwikkelen van modellen en maquettes, van ideeën­generatie via feasibility-onderzoek en mechanische berekeningen tot teken- en ontwerp-werk in CAD. Hij kent de mogelijkheden en moeilijkheden op z'n duimpje. Wanneer je samen met hem je keus hebt bepaald, bouwt hij het model precies naar je wens. Hij beschikt zowel over de juiste software (kennis, kunde en ervaring) als over de hardware (machines, gereedschappen en materialen) om van het model een klinkend succes te maken. Zijn vakmanschap komt de prijs, de levertijd, de kwaliteit en afwerking van het model beslist ten goede.

Well. I think I may say that there is a wide choice of options open to you. Get the advice of a professional. He can offer technical support in the development of all types of models, from brainstorming and the generation of ideas, via feasibility studies and mechanical calculations straight on to crafting and draughting in CAD. He knows the possibilities and the difficulties by heart. When you've made your choice in co-operation with him, he will build the model exactly to your liking. He has both the required software (knowledge, dexterity, experience) and hardware (machinetools, hand tools and materials) at his disposal. In this way, a successful model is guaranteed. His skills will ensure the best finish and quality, delivery in time and at reasonable price.

Werkterrein

Metaal, hout, kunststoffen en papier/karton. Ik ontwerp en bouw alle bovengenoemde soorten modellen en maquettes: in 3D, 2½D en 2D; en ontwerp computergesteund alle soorten bouwplaten en gelaagde prenten.

Scope

Metal, wood, plastics and paper / cardboard. I design and build all types of models described above; in 3D, 2½D and 2D; and I computer-design all types of cardboard cut-out models and layered pictures.

Ambachtelijk

Hier vind je nog klassieke handbewerkingen zoals vijlen, schrapen, smeden. Ik ken antieke recepturen voor oppervlakteverfraaiing en -veredeling en pas ze ook toe. In verband met hun gunstige vormgevings­mogelijkheden spelen hard- en zachtsolderen in de werkplaats een prominente rol. Kleinschalig non-ferro gietwerk doe ik in eigen beheer; grootschaliger gietwerk wordt uitbesteed, met eigengebouwde gietmodellen.

Traditional

Here you'll find classical manual work, such as filing, scraping and smithing and forging. I know the ancient recipes for surface treatment and finishing and apply them as required. Due to their versatility, soft soldering and brazing are used frequently in my workshop. Small parts I do cast in my own crucible non-ferrous foundry; larger parts are sent out. I make all casting patterns myself, for obvious reasons.

Machinaal

Daarnaast heb ik een ruim scala aan verspanende (fijn) mechanische bewerkingen in huis: draaien, boren, kotteren, tappen, schaven, steken, frezen, zagen. Tot de kleinste onderdelen van schaalmodellen.

Materialen

Ik beschik over een toegesneden pakket grondstoffen, materialen, halffabrikaten en normonderdelen (zoals bouten en moeren vanaf M1) voor zuiver schaalwerk.

Machining

I have accurate machinetools for a considerable range of machining operations: turning, drilling, boring, tapping, shaping, slotting, milling, sawcutting. Up to the smallest parts of true-to-scale models.

Materials

I keep a well-chosen range of raw materials, strip, bar and profile stock and standard parts (such as bolts and nuts from M1 upwards), to ensure true scale work.

Documentatie

Op wens voorzie ik een afgeleverd model van een uitvoerige documentatie en bedienings- en onderhouds-handleiding; of een grondige (historische) verantwoording van de gemaakte keuzes bij uitvoering en ontwerp.

If required, I prepare extensive documentation and an operation / maintenance guide for a finished model. Where applicable, also a serious historical account of the why and wherefore of the chosen design.
