Inleiding

Van 1905 tot aan de sluiting in 1978 lag even ten oosten van Schiedam (Zuid-Holland), aan de Nieuwe Maas, de welbekende Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek Werf Gusto v/h A.F. Smulders Engineers and Shipbuilders.

Introduction

From 1905 till the closure in 1978 the famous Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek Werf Gusto v/h A.F. Smulders Engineers and Shipbuilders could be found, adjacent to the Nieuwe Maas, just east of Schiedam (Zuid-Holland).

In 1907 bezocht een groep leden van het Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs de fabriek. Zij werden uitgebreid rondgeleid door de Technisch Bedrijfs­leider J.D. Dresselhuijs. Deze stelde voor die gelegenheid een ge­detailleerde en ruim geïllustreerde beschrijving op van de toen nog piepjonge Schiedamse vestiging. In 1907, a group of members of the Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs (Royal Institution of Engineers) visited the works. They were given an extensive tour by Technical Director J.D. Dresselhuijs. On this occassion, a detailed and well-illustrated description of the - still very young - Schie­dam establishment was prepared by Dresselhuis. I reproduce this description on the set of Dutch pages presented here.

In 1927 publiceerde Werf Gusto een beschrijving van haar bedrijf in een Engelstalige publi­catie, genaamd "The importance of Holland, seen from the air". Bij de tekst werden twee luchtfoto's gegeven, waarop goed is te zien, hoe het bedrijf in twee decennia was uitgegroeid. Ik geef deze beschrijving in z'n geheel op de hier gepresenteerde set Engelse pagina's.

In 1927, Werf Gusto published a concise description of the works in an English book, called "The importance of Holland, seen from the air". To the text were added two beautiful aerial photos. From these, it becomes clear how the works grew in the two decades since its inception. I reproduce this description on the set of English pages presented here.
